The influence of a godly mother is underrated. Only when all things are made new in the kingdom of God will I be able to see how much of the triumphs and blessings of my life were borne up by the prayers of my parents.
One of the marks of my mom that I appreciate is that she does not shrink from letting us do potentially dangerous and difficult things for Jesus. It saddened me to hear the reason that several of the kids in our church could not go on our youth group’s mission trip to Guatemala: their parents would not let them because they thought it was not safe.
Following Jesus is rarely safe. It does not ensure the expectation that your kids will grow up in the area, settle down in comfortable jobs, get married, and have cute grandkids that live five minutes away. It has not happened in our family. My mom only gets to see the grandkids after a nine hour flight to Europe. Her oldest daughter is heading to Ethiopia to a village so rural communication is limited to email run on a spotty radio signal. The rest of us aren’t sure where we will end up, but for all of us who desire to serve God, we can be sure that wherever it will be it probably won’t be safe.
God bless all the mothers who love their children so much they encourage them to do hard things for Jesus. And if you don’t know of such a mother (I think they are a rare phenomenon) let me know—I can introduce you to one.
