"My" is a dangerous word

Prayer should reflect justification. Edwards never tired of pointing out that no matter how great the hypocrites' joy was, it was ultimately a joy centered on themselves. It looks religions, smooth, authentic and chipper-- all fanned by the fuel of self. It struck me recently how my flesh hijacks human joys, disguising them in the garb of devotional delight. “I am thankful I am not like other men.” fills my mouth without my even realizing it. “My family not like other families, my purpose not like other purposes, my desires not like other desires, my gifts not like other gifts, my hopes not like other hopes…”

God have mercy on us, sinners.
